Abstract

Introduction: Appropriate self-management and the promotion of health literacy will assist elderly individuals with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in carrying out their daily activities normally.

Research objectives: This study aimed to investigate health literacy and self-management, and examine the association between health literacy and self-management among elderly individuals with BPH.

Research methodology: This study employed a descriptive correlation design. The sample consisted of 84 males over the age of 60 who had been diagnosed with mild to moderately severe BPH but had not yet undergone surgery. Instruments included a demographic and health data interview form, a health literacy questionnaire, and a self-management behavior scale for elderly individuals with BPH. Data were analyzed using descriptive and Pearson's correlation statistics.

Results: Findings indicated that elderly individuals with BPH had moderate levels of health literacy and self-management. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between health literacy and self-management in elderly individuals with BPH at a moderate level (r = .422, p < .001).

Conclusion: The participants displayed moderate overall health literacy; however, their critical health literacy may be insufficient in terms of lacking the ability to think critically about reliable information and make informed decisions regarding their self-care.

Implications: Health professionals can utilize the findings of this study as preliminary data for planning and promoting self-management among elderly individuals with BPH through the enhancement of health literacy.
