Introduction: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can lead to dementia. Delay onset of dementia can be done by stimulating cognition.
Research objectives: To examine the effects of the cognitive training model by using multidisciplinary team approach on the cognition, daily living activities, anxiety, and depression among older persons with MCI in the urban day care facility for older person.
Research methodology: This study was quasi-experimental research using a two-group pretest-posttest design with a follow-up of one month. Samples were divided into two groups by purposive sampling. The experimental group was 13 older people with MCI in a day care facility for older persons and participated in the six-session cognitive training model with three hours each and two weeks apart. The control group was 14 older people with MCI received usual care. Data were collected using the assessments for cognition, abilities to perform daily activities, anxiety and depression. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Friedman test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and Mann-Whitney U-test.
Results: The mean scores of cognitive performances during the post-experiment period and at the 1-month follow-up of the experimental group were significantly higher than the pre-experiment period. When comparing between groups during the post-experiment period and at the 1-month follow-up, the mean scores of cognitive performances was significantly higher and anxiety and depression scores significantly were lower than the control group. However, the mean score of daily living activities of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control groups.
Conclusions: The cognitive training model for older persons with MCI improve cognition and reduce anxiety and depression.
Implications: Administrators, nurses and multidisciplinary team in the urban day care facility for older person should organize continuously cognitive training activities for older person with MCI.
