Abstract

Introduction: In the course of Maternal, Infant, and Midwifery Nursing Practice, students are provided with the opportunity to practice stitching episiotomy wounds before they start working in real situations. This is to help students gain confidence and to ensure the safety of patients from potential complications. However, there is still a lack of equipment for practicing realistic episiotomy repair stitching skills.

Research objectives: 1) To develop an innovative training manikin for episiotomy repair to train episiotomy repair skills for nursing students, 2) To evaluate the quality of the innovative training manikin for episiotomy repair, and 3) To evaluate the satisfaction of using the innovative training manikin for episiotomy repair.

Research methodology: Research and development method included 1) Analyze and identify the problem, 2) Study the concepts, principles, and feasibility, 3) Design and create the innovation, 4) Evaluate the use of the innovation, 5) Experiment and improve the innovation, and 6) Summarize and disseminate. The participants consisted of 30 nursing students in the third and fourth year. The tools used include equipment for developing episiotomy repair innovations, equipment for practicing suturing, a 5-item innovation quality assessment form, and a 6-item innovation satisfaction assessment form, which were validated by five experts. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation statistics.

Results: The mannequin for episiotomy repair has been created, featuring a rubber-based core and a silicone outer surface. It can be used to practice real-world stitching skills. The overall quality and satisfaction levels were high (M = 3.95, SD = .62, M = 4.16, SD = .61, respectively).

Conclusions: The innovative training manikin for episiotomy repair can be used in laboratory practice and pre-employment training in the delivery room to develop skills and confidence in students.

Implications: It can be further developed to create other training manikins for nursing students.
