Medication Literacy in Older Adults with Chronic Diseases

Introduction: Most elderly individuals suffer from chronic illnesses leading them to use multiple medications to control or manage their conditions. There are various factors affecting the development of adverse drug reactions, such as age, education level, severity awareness, perceived benefits, social support, and medication literacy. Medication literacy is a factor that can be managed to change in medication usage behaviors in older adults with chronic diseases.
Objective: To emphasize healthcare providers regarding the importance and development of methods for medication literacy in older adults with chronic diseases.
Key issues: The use of multiple medications in older adults affects physical and psychological health. It is necessary to promote medication literacy, factors influencing medication literacy in older adults, strategies for managing medication use, and the application of medication knowledge to reduce the severity of medical error.
Conclusions: Promoting medication literacy in older adults with chronic diseases can prevent and decrease complications from medication use which improve health and quality of life.
Implications: Future research can use the knowledge from this study to develop programs to promote medication literacy in older adults with chronic diseases.
