Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, home chemotherapy has emerged as a viable alternative for delivering timely medication to patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).
Research objectives: This study aimed to investigate the safety of home chemotherapy for both patients and providers, assess patients' confidence in their protection against COVID-19 infection, and gauge the satisfaction levels of patients and caregivers availing home chemotherapy services.
Research methodology: This study involved 35 patients with colon cancer, 36 caregivers, and 39 nurses participating in a home chemotherapy project. The participants were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included a demographic data questionnaire, healthcare provider and patient safety assessment questionnaire, survey to gauge confidence in COVID-19 safety measures during home chemotherapy, and satisfaction evaluation questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Patients expressed confidence in various safety aspects, including infection prevention, proper usage of safe medication, effective patient follow-up, care for joints and intravenous lines administering the medication, and adherence to physician consultation. Providers noted strict adherence to safety protocols that encompassed technological communication, prevention of occupational hazards, emotional support provisions, safeguarding against occupational diseases, compliance with legal and travel safety standards, and fostering an appropriate working environment and practices. All patients reported feeling safe from COVID-19 while receiving chemotherapy at home. Patients with CRC and caregivers indicated a high level of satisfaction with home chemotherapy services.
Conclusions: Home chemotherapy is a safe and confidence-inspired method for administering chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both the patients and caregivers reported high satisfaction with this service.
Implications: Given its demonstrated safety and high levels of patient and caregiver satisfaction, hospitals capable of offering home chemotherapy should consider integrating it as a new service model. This alternative could potentially flourish in the post-pandemic "new normal."
