Abstract

Introduction: Stress in the elderly is caused by physical and psychosocial factors. Providing stress relief for older individuals through SKT1 and 2 programs offers an additional avenue for reducing stress, blood pressure, and heart rate.

Research objectives:  To examine the effects of the SKT1 and 2 programs on stress, blood pressure, and heart rate in elderly individuals experiencing moderate stress.

Research methodology: A quasi-experimental, two-group pretest-posttest design. The study included elderly individuals with moderate stress levels divided into 47 trial and control groups. The treatment group underwent the SKT1 and 2 programs for 12 weeks, whereas the control group maintained their normal lifestyle independently of the experimental intervention. Data were collected before and after the experiment using the Thai Perceived Stress Scale (T-PSS-10) along with measurements of blood pressure and heart rate. Differences in averages were compared between groups using independent t-test statistics, and within groups using paired t-test statistics, with a significance level of .05.

Results:  The treatment group had an average stress level of 13.72 (SD = 3.32) points, whereas the control group had an average stress level of 19.51 (SD = 2.66) points. The observed discrepancy between the groups resulted in a mean decrease of 5.79 (95% CI = 4.55 to 7.02) points, indicating statistical significance (p<.001).

Conclusion: The SKT1 and 2 programs reduced stress in elderly people and decreased blood pressure and heart rate.

Implications: Healthcare providers in primary care settings should consider implementing SKT1 and 2 concentration therapy programs for elderly individuals experiencing moderate-to-high levels of stress.
