Factors Influencing Mental Health Status of Professional Nurses in a Private Hospital
Keywords:

This predictive correlational study aimed to examine mental health status and factors influencing mental health status among professional nurses working in a private hospital. A simple random sampling was used to recruit 100 professional nurses. A set of questionnaires was used to collect data including: a demographic questionnaire, the General Health questionnaire-28, the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, the Social Intelligence questionnaire, the Thai resilience quotient questionnaire, and the work-life balance questionnaire. Their reliabilities were 0.93, 0.70, 0.91, 0.88, and 0.80, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results revealed that total mean score of mental health was 3.14 (SD. = 4.33), indicating that the participants had good mental health status. On the other hand, almost a quarter (24%) of them reported poor mental health scores indicating that they had mental health problems. Results of stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that sleep quality, and work-life balance together explained 32.6% of the variance in mental health status among the participants. Sleep quality was the best predictor (ß = 0.453) of mental health status, followed by work-life balance (ß = -0.194).
The findings of this study suggest that nurse administrators might develop a model or intervention focusing on enhancing good sleep quality and work-life balance to promote mental health among professional nurses, especially those who work in private hospitals.
