This descriptive study aimed to explore geriatric depression among Thai elderly in Chainat province. Subjects were both males and females who were able to communicate in Thai and provided information
in person. Multi-stage random sampling method was used to recruit three hundred and eighty-four participants. Cochran method was used to calculate sample size with confidence level of 95%. Instrument included the Thai Geriatric Depression Scale (TGDS) with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .72. Data were analyzed using mean, percentage, and logistics regression. Findings were as follows: geriatric depression among Thai elderly at mild level is 23.66%, followed by moderate depression, and severe depression at 2.13%, and 1.56%, respectively. There were significant relationships among gender (OR = 3.02, 95% CI = 1.46-6.34, p = .001), income (OR = 1.01,95% CI = 0.87-1.04, p = .002), family relationships (OR = 3.58, 95% CI= 1.67-6.68, p<.001), and depression in Thai elderly in Chainat province. The findings of the study suggest that public health personnel can apply data obtained in monitoring and treatment as well as promoting well-being and preventing geriatric depression among Thai elderly in communities.
