SELF-MANAGEMENT FOR SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING

Self-management is a process where clients change their views about their behavior comprised of 6 steps: 1) goal selection 2) information collection 3) information processing and evaluation 4) decision making 5) action, and 6) self-reaction (Creer, 2000). To apply the self-management on breastfeeding, the mothers need to follows these steps: determine a clear goal setting, observe or take notes process data, then make a decision to breastfeed and evaluate breastfeeding behavior comparing with self-set goal after practicing breastfeeding. These processes of self-management can lead to successful breastfeeding. This article intends to present an overview of the breastfeeding situation, the self-management concept, apply self-management to success breastfeeding and the suggestion for implementation in order to promote successful breastfeeding by using self-management concept as a guideline.
