Abstract

This correlational-descriptive study aimed to examine visual-related quality of life in older persons with glaucoma, and to investigate the relationships between age, education level, level of glaucoma severity, depression, activity of daily living, social support, and medication compliance of older persons with glaucoma. One hundred and thirty-six out patients were randomly selected from 2 super-tertiary hospitals including Rajavithi hospital, and Ramathibodi hospital. Research instruments included demographic information, Thai visual function questionaires, social support questionnaires, ADL index questionnaires, Thai geriatric depression scale, and medication compliance questionnaires. All question-naires were validated for content validity by 5 experts. Their Chronbach’s alpha coefficients were .809, .829, .819, .836 and .871, respectively. Descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, and Point-Biserial Correlation were used to analyze data. Older persons with glaucoma reported visual-related quality of life score at a moderate level ( gif.latex?\bar{x}= 66.54, SD.=20.80). Education level, activity of daily living, social support, and medication compliance were positively significantly related to visual-related quality of life among older persons with glaucoma (r = .215, .288, .217, .171, respectively; p<.05). Level of glaucoma severity was negatively significantly related to visual-related quality of life (r=-.330, p<.05). Depression was negatively significantly related to visual-related quality of life (r=-.612, p<.05). A variable not related to visual-related quality of life was age. Visual-related quality of life among older persons with glaucoma should be enhanced. Nursing activities to promote quality of life of patients should be implemented. Nurses need to be able to assess factors related to quality of life of patients to find causes and proper nursing care.
