Abstract

Introduction: Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death. This study presents the usage of concept of Self-efficacy theory in the development of self-efficacy in stroke prevention among Village Health Volunteers (VHVs).

Research objectives: To examine effects of the VHVs knowledge and attitude development program on stroke prevention.

Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental pre-post design with one experimental group and one control group. Participants were 112 VHVs, 56 for each group. Data were collected at pre-test and post-test. The participants in the experimental group received the VHVs knowledge and attitude development program on stroke prevention as follows. The 1^st time consisted of an activity to educate about stroke prevention and group activity to share experiences and reflect to create a good attitude. The 2^nd time included an activity to increase the ability to prevent stroke. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test.

Results: At post-test, between-group significant differences of knowledge and attitude were found (p < .05). Also, significant improvements by the experimental group participants between pre-test and post-test were found for knowledge and attitude (p < .05).

Conclusion: The VHVs knowledge and attitude development program could be used to promote the capability of VHVs on stroke prevention and to care for patients effectively leading to good health and well-being.

Implications: Health services should implement the VHVs knowledge and attitude development program for stroke prevention.
