Introduction: Social skill is a major problem in children with special needs, especially, children with autism and children with intellectual disabilities. Integrating play of local wisdom to promote social skills allows children with special needs to higher participate in activities, sharing, and compliance with group agreements. Research objectives: To compare the social skills in children with special needs before and after receiving the local wisdom play program. Research methodology: This study employed a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design. Sample included 15 children with specific needs early childhood 4 – 10 years old who were diagnosed by a psychiatrist as autism and intellectual disabilities with social maturity at a moderate to mild level. The scores calculated using the Vineland Social Maturity Scale were between 40-89 points. Research instruments were the local wisdom play program, and the social skills observation form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and t-test. Results: At follow-up, children with special needs who received the local wisdom play program had significant social skills higher than at base line (p=0.01). Conclusions: The local wisdom play programs can be used to develop social skills of children with special needs. Implications: There should be the study to compare social skills between the experimental group and the comparison group to investigate the efficacy of the program.
