Development of the Suturing Wound Model for Nursing Students

This is a model development research project aiming at developing a suturing wound model. The objective is to develop a model and an evaluation model using students’ satisfaction to ascertain the quality and values of the model. The study was conducted in 2 stages: a) designing and developing the model and b) evaluating the satisfaction of suturing wound model. Thirty junior students participated in this study using random sampling method. The questionnaire consisted of items pertaining satisfaction of its quality and value. Content validity of questionnaire was evaluated by 3 experts. The reliability of questionnaire was examined using Cronbach’s coefficient alpha, resulting in 0.96. The data were collected after they sutured the meat followed by the suturing wound model. The data were analyzed using paired T-Test statistics.
The results revealed that nursing students indicated greater satisfaction in both quality and value of the suturing wound model in comparison to using meat (p < .05). They showed high level of satisfaction in terms of storage conveniences and easiness in movement ( = 4.90, SD = .31) when compare with using meat ( = 2.27, SD = .74). Realistic of the skin, meat was closer to the real skin ( = 4.07, SD = .79) than the suturing wound model ( = 3.80, SD = .66). In terms of value, the suturing wound model can be used to practice repeatedly ( = 4.73, SD = .45) when compare with using meat ( = 2.20, SD = .85).
The developed suturing wound model was a model that performed as a part task trainer. The result of this study indicates that the suturing wound model is suitable as a model for the training of nursing students. The model is a valuable and appropriate tool to enhance suturing skill in laboratory because students can repeat the practice, develop a technical skill, and acquire greater confidence in suturing wound before practice in the clinical care setting.
