Predictive Factors of Resilience among Elderly Living in Home for the Aged

          Elderly residents in elderly homes experience multiple changes in context and situations in their lives under the limitations and rules of these homes. These changes may affect the ability for the elderly residents to adapt themselves in comparison with the elderly in general. So, resilience in their life is crucial for them. This predictive correlational study aimed to determine the predictive factors of resilience among elderly living in homes for the aged. The participants were 92 older adults living in Thammapakorn Wat Muang and Thammapakorn Pho Klang home for the aged at Nakhon Ratchasima Province. They were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Research instruments included the Self-esteem Scale, the Perceived Health Status Scale, the Optimism Scale, the Interpersonal Relations Scale, the Social Support Scale, and the Resilience Scale, with reliabilities of .73, .82, .70, .76, .91, and .96, respectively. Descriptive statistics, and multiple regression were employed for data analysis.

             The results revealed that the resilience of these elderly residents was at a moderate level (Mean = 121.89, SD = 13.07). Social support and self-esteem could predict resilience for 48.6 % (R2 = .486, p < .01)

             The findings suggested that in designing nursing intervention to promote resilience among elderly, nurses and healthcare professionals should take into account the enhancement of their social support and self-esteem.
