This study was aimed to screen the antioxidant and anticancer activities of 15 ethanol extracts of the herbal based folk healers’ tonic remedies used in Sakon Nakhon Thai Traditional Medicine Hospital. The antioxidant activities were assessed by DPPH and FRAP assays. In addition, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids compounds and total tannin compounds were quantified. Anti-cancer, and cytotoxic properties were evaluated in vitro using MCF7-breast cancer cell line and African green monkey kidney, respectively. The maximum percentage inhibition by DPPH scavenging activity was found to be 181.6 ± 0.9, 71.7 ± 3.9 and 69.9 ± 2.0 from recipe number THS013, THS007 and THS006, respectively. Ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were 3.2 ± 0.0, 3.1 ± 0.1 and 3.0 ± 0.0 mg of ferrous sulphate equivalence/g of extract from recipe number THS008, THS015 and THS013 respectively. The highest total phenolic content was obtained from the extracts of THS015, THS005 and THS009 in the ranged of 3.0–3.4 mg GAE/ml. Total flavonoid content in sample number THS014, THS011 and THS005 was found to be 3.3–4.1 mg CE/ml. The extracts of THS003, THS004 and THS001 possessed the highest tannin content which was in the ranged of 2.2–2.3 mg TAE/ml. Moreover, some of the tonic potent anti-Vero cell from the extracts of THS001 was found to have an IC50 of 18.73 µg/ml, all tonic remedies MCF 7 breast cancer cells were IC50 > 50 µg/ml. The result from this study suggested that these recipes should be studied for their efficacy and safety in detail prior to develop products for health benefits.
