Effect of a Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) Learning Program on Professional Nursing Competencies

This quasi-experimental study using a one-group pretest–posttest design aimed to examine the effects of a learning program for nursing quality and nursing safety on the competencies of professional nurses. The participants consisted of 47 professional nurses, enrolled in the Risk Management for Quality and nursing Safety Program at Khon Kaen University between August to December 2025. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments was a 3-day, 21-hour workshop-based learning program, and the content validity was checked by 3 experts, yielding a value of 0.91. Data collection instruments comprised a 36-item QSEN competency assessment with a reliability coefficient of 0.96, and a risk management competency assessment with an Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) of 0.95 and a reliability coefficient of 0.98. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-test.
Results: After participating in the program, the professional nurses demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in all 6 QSEN competency domains compared with the pre-intervention scores (p < .001). The quality improvement domain showed the highest change (t 14.196), followed by the informatics domain (t 13.508). The patient-centered care domain demonstrated the highest increase in mean score.
