Abstract
This research and development aimed to develop and study the results of using nursing guidelines to prevent birth asphyxia in newborns. This study consisted of 4 phrases: (1) the development of a nursing practice guideline; (2) the quality assessment of a nursing practice guideline; (3) the trial of a nursing practice guideline; and (4) the evaluation of a nursing practice guideline. The sample consisted of 5 registered nurses and 60 pregnant women, who gave birth in the delivery room, Huai Yot Hospital. The pregnant women were divided into 30 individuals in the control group and 30 individuals in the experimental group. The research instrument was a nursing practice guideline to prevent birth asphyxia of newborn and the content validity was checked by 5 experts, yielding a value of 1.0. Data collection tools included a personal information form; the feasibility assessment form of the guideline implementation, yielding CVI of 0.90, and KR-20 of 0.80; the newborn’s birth asphyxia assessment form, yielding CVI of 0.90, and KR-20 of 0.80; and the nurses' satisfaction form, yielding CVI of 1.0, and Cronbach's alpha concentration of 0.89.Data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics and the independent sample t-test.
The results showed that the developed nursing practice guideline consisted of 3 phases: (1) the initial phase; (2) the first stage of labor; and (3) the second and third stage of labor. The incident of newborn birth asphyxia in the experimental group was lower than in the control group; but there was no statistically significant difference (p = 0.197). The feasibility of the nursing practice guideline implementation was high, yielding 85.48%. The satisfaction of the nurses was high (Mean 4.67, SD 0.10).
