Abstract

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to investigate factors influencing antenatal care after 12 weeks. The sample consisted of 10 pregnant women and 20 healthcare personnel in Na Yong District, Trang Province. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and were analyzed using inductive summary analysis.

The results revealed that the pregnant women and the healthcare personnel shared similar perspectives on factors affecting antenatal care after 12 weeks in four issues: (1) factors related to the pregnant woman included not knowing that she was pregnant, lack of understanding about the process of receiving prenatal care services, and the need of support from her family; (2) factors related to the process of receiving antenatal care services, for instance inconvenient opening of the service hours; (3) economic factors, for example absences or leave that affect the income; and (4) social factors, such as not being married, thereby necessary to  conceal the pregnancy. Therefore, the success of promoting antenatal care before 12 weeks required providing information, a thorough understanding process of the antenatal care service provision, arranging of suitable service times for the pregnant women, and assisting the women who need concealing their pregnancies.
