Comparison of life skills in preventing health risk behaviors of adolescents

Understanding of life skills to prevent health risky behaviors in adolescent is important that nurses and those involved in caring for adolescents can be used to promote the prevention of risky behaviors among adolescents. The purpose of this study was to compare the life skills of high school students on 4 components: (1) self-worth, (2) building good relationships with others, (3) managing emotions and stress, and (4) analytical thinking to prevent risky behaviors. A sample of 258 high school students in Bangkok were recruited using random stratified sampling technique. The research instrument consisted of life skills questionnaire. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test.
The results (1) personal information found that 51.58% of the samples were male, 46.12% had the average grade point of 2.00-3.00, 70.54% were satisfied with their grades, and 53.88% had a good family relationship. (2) The overall life skills and the 4 components to prevent health risky behaviors were at a good level. (3) Comparing the life skills by gender, satisfaction with academic performance, and family relationships; it was found that the overall life skills and the 4 components of the male samples were statistically significant better than females at .05. The life skills of the students who satisfied or dissatisfied with their academic performance were not different. Students with moderate family relationships had statistically significant better life skills than students with good family relationships at .05.
