Good Governance of Nursing Organization, the Priest Hospital: Strategic to Practice

Abstract

The purposes of this qualitative research were to: 1) analyze and synthesize the problems and the environment affecting the good governance strategies implementation, 2) analyze the internal and external factors affecting the good governance strategies implementation and 3) identify proper policies recommendations for good governance strategies implementation of the Priest Hospital.  Dates were collected using document analysis and in-depth interviews with non-participative observation. A purposive sample of the study consisted of chief executives from the Priest Hospital, relevant organization and experts on strategic examination and selection. Data were analyzed using SWOT analysis, 7S-McKinsey, TOWS Matrix matching techniques, EDFR, documentary analysis and creative dialogues. 


                The results revealed problems and environment affecting the good governance strategies implementation of the Priest Hospital. First, the focus on excellence in management and ethically-led quality of nursing organization lead the patients to higher medical treatment outcomes. Second, internal factors affecting the good governance implementation included organizational structure, effective management of the resources, modern medical equipment, the advancement of medical and nursing sciences, and free-of-charge medical treatments. The external factors affecting the good governance implementation consisted of policies from Department of Medical Services, the Priest Hospital and standards of the nursing care quality in relation to Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Priest Hospital Foundation. Third, the Priest Hospital’s implementation of good governance comprised of four main strategies: 1) strengthening effective medical treatments for Buddhist monks under the Buddhist disciplines 2) developing managerial and care systems under good governance principles 3) establishing a high-performance nursing organization with expertise in information technology and 4) forming of health care network for Buddhist monks. The aforementioned strategies would lead to the good governance implementation of the Priest Hospital. Thus, Buddhist monks will be able to get access to quality health care, maintain their well-being and the sustainability of Buddhism.
