Abstract

An increase of hypertensive patients with pre-diabetic condition was found at Tha- Luang Hospital yielding the number of 739, 834, 863 cases in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively. Prevention of pre-diabetes can be reduced through a risk modification program on health behavior.  Thus, Tha-Luang hospital carried out a study on the effects of the health behavior modification program in hypertensive patients with pre-diabetic condition. The objective of the study was to compare fasting blood sugar level, weight and waist circumference measurement of hypertensive patients with pre-diabetic condition before and after receiving the health behavior modification program. This study employed quasi-experimental research methodology with one group pre-post test design. A sample of 33 hypertensive patients with pre-diabetic condition was recruited according to the study’s criteria. They received a 6-month health behavior modification program in which consisted of motivational interview, carbohydrate counting and elastic exercise. Data on fasting blood sugar level, weight and waist circumference measurement before and after receiving the program were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test statistics.

The results showed that 33 hypertensive patients with pre-diabetic condition did not turn out to be new diabetic patient after receiving a health behavior modification program for 6 months. In addition, the fasting blood sugar level, weight and waist circumference measurement before and after receiving the program were prominent decreased yielding statistically significant at the level of < 0.05. Therefore, the health behavior modification program focusing on behavior change in hypertensive patients with pre-diabetic can effectively reduce the number of diabetes new cases in pre-diabetics.
