Abstract

ABSTRACT

Prevention is better than treatment, the appropriate behavior is among pre-diabetes can prevent new Type 2 diabetes mellitus. This quasi-experiment research aimed to evaluate the Self -regulation with Buddy Care Program on diabetes prevention behaviors, body weight, and blood sugar level among over weight pre-diabetes. Over weight pre-diabetes were selected from health promotion hospital (HPHs) in Prong-akat tombon, Bangnampriao district, Chachoengsao province. The sample was randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Simple random sampling, the area is divided into two parts and the group is divided into villages. Select case from random by cluster sampling into experimental group (n = 28) and those in another village into the comparative group (n = 28). The experimental group participated in the 12 week the Self -regulation with Buddy Care Program, whereas the comparative group received usual care services from the HPH. The diabetes prevention behaviors, body weight, and blood sugar level were evaluated before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, Chi-square and Independence t-test. The results showed that experimental group achieved statically higher diabetes prevention behaviors (p < .01) and lower body weight than the comparative group (p < .01) but the blood sugar level was not significantly  different  between two groups (p = .054). The results confirmed that the Self -regulation with Buddy Care Program was partial effective program to prevent new Type 2 diabetes mellitus in pre-diabetes. Increased diabetes prevention behaviors and lower risk factors for weight loss. Nurses and health care providers in HPHs can serve as guidelines for providing services to promote the modification of diabetes prevention behaviors and promote weight loss among the diabetic patients. There is still a need for repeated studies on the effects of the program on reducing blood glucose levels in the risk group.
