Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the factors influencing quality of life among caregivers of older adults with chronic diseases in Ubon Ratchathani province. The participants were caregivers for older adults with chronic diseases in the community. Samples were 161 caregivers for older adults with chronic diseases in the community. The data was collected from July 2021 to March 2022. Simple random sampling was used to recruit the participants. The instruments were    1) A personal information questionnaire for caregivers 2) A personal information questionnaire for older adults with chronic diseases 3) An Access to healthcare services questionnaire 4) A social support questionnaire 5) A caregiver burden questionnaire 6) A caregiver quality of life questionnaire. The content validity of the questionnaire was assessed using content validity index (CVI). The content validity index for questionnaires 3), 4), 5) and 6) were 0.87, 0.84, 0.97 and 0.95, respectively. Cronbach's alpha coefficient of reliability were 0.83, 0.81, 0.91 and 0.87 respectively. Descriptive statistics Eta, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression were employed to analyze the data.

     The results showed that

     1. 95.70% of the caregivers had a moderate level of quality of life (M=76.47, SD=8.96), 76.50% of the caregivers had a moderate level of access to healthcare services (M=31.51, SD=7.62), 60% of the caregivers had a moderate level of social support (M=48.85, SD=9.95), and 52.50% of the caregivers had a moderate to high level of workload burden (M=46.48, SD=9.63).

     2. Factors influencing quality of life among caregivers of older adults with chronic diseases consisted of the experience of care giving, health status in caregivers, caregiver’s workload burden and social support which explained 51.20% (R2=.512, p<.001) of the variance in caregiver’s quality of life.

The results suggested that healthcare professionals and elderly care agency, who had responsibility in managing the caregiving for older adults with chronic diseases in community, should pay attention to caregivers, develop basic care skills for the elderly with chronic diseases in caregivers in the family as to gain experience and build confidence in caregiving, make plans in caregiving for the elderly from the start to reduce the workload burden. In addition, social support should be increased in order for caregivers to have a good quality of life whilst effectively care for the elderly with chronic diseases. This process can lead to a better quality of life both in the caregivers and the elderly.
