Factors Related to Gestational Diabetes Mellitus among Women of Reproductive Age Visiting a Tertiary Hospital in Pathum Thani Province

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the factors associated with gestational diabetes mellitus among women of reproductive age visiting a tertiary hospital in Pathum Thani province. The sample consisted of 320 women of reproductive age (15-44 years old) and visitant at a tertiary hospital in Pathum Thani province. The subjects were recruited by purposive random sampling, based on the inclusion criteria. Data were collected by self-administration between October to December 2022. Data were collected by using a questionnaire divided in 7 parts: 1) general information, 2) knowledge about gestational diabetes, 3) attitudes with gestational diabetes assessment form, 4) health care behavior measurement form, 5) enabling factors about gestational diabetes, 6) reinforcing factors about gestational diabetes, and 7) other questions on gestational diabetes. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression. The result showed that the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus among women of reproductive age was 64.4%. Factors which remained significantly associated to gestational diabetes mellitus among women of reproductive age were age (ORAdj= 2.94, 95% CI= 1.34-7.22, p=0.010), family history of diabetes (ORAdj= 3.35, 95% CI= 1.30-7.32, p=0.008), history of body mass index before pregnancy (ORAdj= 3.13, 95% CI= 1.22-8.10, p=0.005), attitude with gestational diabetes mellitus (ORAdj= 2.47, 95% CI= 1.20-6.21, p=0.005) and health care behaviors (ORAdj= 3.82, 95% CI= 1.40-8.77, p=0.010). These results can apply to nursing care plan for preventing and eliminating the risk factors, so to reduce the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus among women of reproductive age and to promote good health of mothers and children.
