Abstract

ABSTRACT

This two groups, quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effects of Andragogical program on knowledge and skills of guardians in surveillance and promotion of early childhood development. The samples were 52 guardians who have child age 2-5 years old and receiving child care at the Baanpakuy child development center. They were selected by purposive sampling and were randomly assigned into an experimental and a control group, 26 each. The experimental group received the Andragogical program while the control group received the regular program. Data were collected using questionnaires including a personal information, a knowledge and a skill test for guardians in surveillance and promotion of childhood development. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann-whitney U test, and Wilcoxon signed-ranks test.

Results showed that in the experimental group, the mean knowledge and skill

scores after the intervention were statistically significant higher than those before the intervention (p<.001). After the intervention, the mean knowledge and skill scores of the experimental group who received the Andragogical program were statistically significant higher than those of the control group (p<.001). These findings recommend that the Andragogical program is an effective intervention in increasing the knowledge and skill scores of guardians in surveillance and promotion of early childhood development. Therefore, nurses and health care providers are able to apply this program in the learning process for guardians to suit circumstances in academics, hospitals, and communities.
