ABSTRACT
This research aims to study emotional quotient of nursing students, Walailak University, compare pretest and posttest of emotional quotient in problem-based learning of nursing students in the subject of leadership and nursing management. Research population consisted of 77 the fourth-year nursing students in term 1/2560 of the Institute of Nursing, Walailak University. The emotional quotient questionnaire instruments was used to investigate and a test. Reliability of the instruments was at 0.85. The data were collected by the questionnaire instrument. The data were analyzed by frequency, mean, standard deviation and paired sample t-test. The results revealed that;
1) The students were female at 96.1% (n=74), span of age at 20-22 years old. Their grade point average at the high school 3.00-3.50 (50.6%, n= 39) and more than 3.50 (44.2 %, n=34) and their current grade point average between 2.50-3.00 (45.5%, n=35) and more than 3.00-3.50 (44.4%, n=34). The nursing students satisfied to problem-based learning at a high level (88.3 %, n=68). The overall mean scores of the emotional quotient in nursing students was at a high level (= 3.08, SD= .46). In terms of dimensions, the mean scores of good dimensions and happy dimensions was at a high level. (= 3.20, SD= .51; = 3.05, SD= .54) respectively. The mean scores of wisdom dimensions was at a normal level. (= 2.98, SD= .42.
2) The result of comparing the overall mean score of the emotional quotient in pre and post problem-based learning was significantly higher than before applying problem based learning (= 3.08 , SD= .46, = 3.19 , SD= .34); (t= -2.15, p<.05). In terms of dimensions, the mean score of good dimensions after learning by problem–based learning was significantly higher than before applying problem-based learning (= 3.20 , SD= .51, = 3.35 , SD= .34); (t= -2.55, p<.05)
This study showed that the model teaching of problem-based learning can develop the emotional quotient as well. The nursing students who learned problem-based learning can develop a good dimension such as the responsibility and sympathy for others. Therefore, the teacher should be encouraged to apply the problem-based learning in the students
