The Effects of Participatory Learning Program on Knowledge and Fundamental Skills of Prevention and Basic Assisted Delivery for Giving Birth Before Arrival among Health Volunteers in Bangkok Metropolitan Region

ABSTRACT
This quasi-experimental research aimed to investigate the effect of participatory learning program on knowledge and fundamental skills of prevention and basic assisted delivery skill for giving birth before hospital arrival by public health volunteers at Bangkok metropolitan region. There were 60 public health volunteers, selected on a specific basis from Public health volunteers from the 30th Chao-Arm Health Center and 31st Earbjittangsubutr Health Center, participate in this study. The participants were divided into 2 groups: experimental and controlled group, with 30 participants each. The experimental group received a participatory learning program and control groups have been learned by lectures. Afterwards, both groups were trained for preventive and supportive care for mothers and babies who were delivered before the hospital arrival. The participatory learning program had 4 steps: 1) Experience, 2) Reflect and Discussion, 3) Encourage understanding and concept (the researcher summarized the ideas of the group, and then conceptualized of their understanding, 4. Experimentation / Application of knowledge and fundamental skills of prevention and basic assisted delivery of giving birth before hospital arrival for public health volunteers in Bangkok metropolitan region. Data were analyzed by frequency, mean, standard deviation and t-test.
The research found that after attended the program, both the experimental group and the controlled group gained more statistically significant different knowledge and skills in preventing and providing basic support to mothers (who were delivered and their babies) before the hospital arrival (t experimental = 16.00, p <.001 and t control = 9.05, p < .001, for knowledge and (t experimental = 12.38, p < .001 and t control = 5.69, p < .001 for skill, respectively). The experimental group was a statistically significant difference of knowledge and fundamental skills of prevention and basic assisted delivery than the controlled groups (t = 2.85, p < .01, t = 4.68, p <.001, respectively)
