Abstract

This two-group quasi-experimental study with a pre- and post-test design aimed to study effect of a self-management program on self-care behaviors and quality of life in new end-stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis patients. The sample consisted of 60 new hemodialysis patients from the Chronic Hemodialysis Unit at Uttaradit Hospital, divided into a control group and an experimental group of 30 patients each. The research instruments included: 1) a self-management program, 2) a self-care behavior questionnaire for new hemodialysis patients, and 3) the 9-Thai Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) scale. The reliability of instruments 2 and 3 was determined by Cronbach's alpha which was .84 and .72, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and statistical tests including Chi-square, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, and Mann Whitney U Test.

The results showed that, 1) after participating in the self-management program, the experimental group exhibited significantly higher scores in self-care behaviors and quality of life compared to pre-program participation at a .05 significance level. 2) after participating in the self-management program, the experimental group had significantly higher scores in self-care behaviors and quality of life than the control group at a .05 significance level.

This study demonstrates that the self-management program effectively improved self-care behaviors and quality of life, suggesting its potential as a valuable approach to promote self-management, prevent complications, and reduce hospitalization costs in new hemodialysis patients.
