บทคัดย่อ
เวชศาสตร์ใต้น้ำในประเทศถือกำเนิดมาอย่างเป็นรูปธรรมโดยการจัดตั้งแผนกเวชศาสตร์ใต้น้ำ กองวิทยาการ กรมแพทย์ทหารเรือ ขึ้นตามอนุมัติกระทรวงกลาโหมเมื่อ 29 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2516 โดยงานเวชกรรมใต้น้ำในการสนับสนุนการปฏิบัติการใต้น้ำมีการดำเนินการมาก่อนเป็นห้วงเวลาหนึ่ง และพัฒนาการอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน ส่วนงานเผยแพร่วิทยาการได้มีการเริ่มต้นในเวลาต่อมา โดยการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้และการจัดการฝึกอบรม และเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้การพัฒนาเวชศาสตร์ใต้น้ำเป็นไปอย่างก้าวกระโดด ร่วมกับมีการจัดหาห้องปรับแรงดันบรรยากาศสูงในกองทัพ และการขยายศาสตร์นี้สู่ทางพลเรือนทั้งในด้านการสนับสนุนงานประดาน้ำ และงานบริการทางการแพทย์ในการแก้ไขปัญหาการเจ็บป่วยจากการดำน้ำทางพลเรือน การพัฒนาเวชศาสตร์ความดันบรรยากาศสูงซึ่งเป็นแขนงเกี่ยวข้องทำให้เวชศาสตร์ใต้น้ำมีการพัฒนาเพื่อให้ใช้ประโยชน์ของห้องปรับแรงดันบรรยากาศสูงอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดและแพร่หลายครอบคลุมทั้งประเทศ การจัดการและดูแลเชิงระบบของการพัฒนางานทั้งเวชกรรมและเวชศาสตร์ใต้น้ำจะนำมาซึ่งความยั่งยืนของเวชศาสตร์ใต้น้ำของประเทศและภูมิภาคต่อไป
