This research and development study aimed at 1) developing the community problem-based learning model to promote learning achievement and critical thinking among nursing students and 2) examining its effectiveness. There were two steps in this study. The first step was development of the teaching and learning model using a community problem-based method. The model was validated by three experts. The second step was testing of the effectiveness of the model. Fifty four nursing students were purposive selected to participate the program. Instruments included the community problem-based learning model, critical thinking assessment and the satisfaction questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and the dependent t-test method were utilized for data analysis.

The results of this study were as follows:

  1. The community problem-based learning model composed of three components, including 1) preparation of students, instructors, and case study in community 2) teaching-learning process, and 3) evaluation of the model.

  2. After implementing the model, the achievement scores among all nursing students were at high level. In addition, the mean score of critical thinking among the sample was at high level ( = 36.65, SD = 10.48) and was significantly higher than that prior using the model (t = 3.97, p < .01). The mean score of students’ satisfactions of the model was also at high level ( = 3.98, SD = 0.76).

Results from this study suggest that it is highly recommended to use this community problem-based learning model in other student groups in order to increase the students’ critical thinking and learning outcomes. It is also recommended that the model should be added as an integrated courses or disciplines in nursing curriculum.
