Effects of a Structured Educational Program on Anxiety in Patients with Non-ST Elevatation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization

Abstract

            This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of a structured educational program on anxiety in patients with Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) undergoing cardiac catheterization. Participants were 60 NSTEMI patients undergoing cardiac catheterization at the Cardiac Catheterization Unit, Queen Sirikit Heart Center of the Northeast, selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. They were divided into a control group (n = 30) receiving routine nursing care and an experimental group (n = 30) who received the structured educational program. The research instruments consisted of the experimental tool, which was the structured educational program. The data collection tools included a personal data record form and an anxiety questionnaire. The experimental control tool was the NSTEMI Knowledge Assessment Form. The content validity of the instruments was verified by five experts, yielding content validity indices of 0.99, 1.0, 0.95 and 0.97, respectively. The study was conducted from September 2024 to April 2025. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for general characteristics, knowledge, and anxiety levels. Inferential statistics, including the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Mann-Whitney U test, Independent t-test, and Paired t-test, were used to compare anxiety levels.
            Results revealed that post-intervention, the experimental group's anxiety levels were significantly lower than their pre-intervention levels (p < .001) and also significantly lower than those of the control group (p < .001).
            This indicates that the structured information program effectively reduced anxiety in NSTEMI patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, potentially leading to improved self-care behaviors and better health outcomes.
