Dietary Behavior of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients with Malnutrition

Abstract

            This cross-sectional study was to study the dietary behavior of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with malnutrition, according to the varying degrees of severity in malnutrition. The sample was a group consisting of 205 patients with malnutrition (BMI < 20 kg/m2) and treated at COPD clinics in the 5 community hospitals, Suratthani province. Data were collected with general and health status questionnaires and dietary habits record form, The Index of item objective congruence (IOC) value of the dietary behavior record is between 0.8 - 1. Data analysis was conducted by frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, median, inter-quartile range and chi-square test statistics. Results revealed that at 90.24% the proportions in the consumption of carbohydrates : proteins : fats in all 3 groups did not vary in proportion. mild, moderate and severe levels of malnutrition severity subjects consume less food than their daily need. Groups with moderate malnutrition had the lowest level of median amount of calories the body received per day, the secondary having severe and mild levels of 765.00 (IQR = 446.63), 797.00 (IQR = 385.05) and 819.00 (IQR = 376.75) calories per day respectively. The sample had appropriate meals per day at 64.88%. There were no differences in the number of meals (p > .05 ). Before eating the sample group gargle/rinse their teeth the most at 66.82%, The most common behavior displayed while eating was slow eating at 39.51% and the most common behavior after eating was resting at 53.17%. Professional nurses and public health personnel should evaluate and make correct dietary recommendations to patients and carers based on severity.
