Situations, Needs, and a Guide for Actions in Mental Health and Students' Psychiatric and Mental Health Service, Walailak University

Abstract

            The purpose of this study was to investigate the situations, needs, and guideline for actions in mental health and psychiatric service towards Walailak students. The samples were 58 undergraduate students who were representative of 13 Academic Schools at Walailak University. Divided into 4 groups, each group consists of 14-15 students. The qualitative data use Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with Semi-Structured Interview regarding to situations, needs, and guideline for actions in mental health and psychiatric service towards Walailak students. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The findings indicated that mental health and psychiatric service by the perception of samples are specific service concerning to mental health care from facing a mild mental problem until it becomes a severe mental illness that loss of self-control and inability to study. Situations the samples perceived that all students facing a mild to severe mental problems as a result of study and personal problems but lack of information about self-checking, specific mental care services and lack of confidence in counselling system security. Needs the samples need confidential communication, quality service, finding personalized ways of solving problems, approachable and without stigma. Guideline for actions offer many alternative services, close the gap of official working hours, respond the point directly and in time. There are quality and sufficient service providers as well as - campaigns to reduce social stigma through modern communication. Understandably proactive and reactive care and continually develop until student’s problem system is resolved. Administrators, professors, students, and related parties should have responsibility accordingly to help students’ problems, and eventually they would graduate with mental wellbeing for developing society.
