Factors Predicting Staff Nurses’ Quality of Work Life, Hospitals under the Jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense

Abstract

           The purposes of this research were to describe the quality of work life of staff nurses in hospital the jurisdiction of the ministry of defense and describe relationships between the job characteristics, participative management, organizational support and investigate factors predicting quality of work life of staff nurses. The subjects consisted of 330 staff nurses in hospital the jurisdiction of the ministry of defence selected by simple random sampling technique. The research instruments were questionnaires consisted of job characteristics, participative management, organizational support and quality of work life. Questionnaires which were tested for content validity were 0.81, 0.80, 0.83, and 0.93, and the reliability were 0.89, 0.96, 0.96, and 0.93. Statistical techniques utilized in data analysis were Mean, Standard deviation, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression analysis. Major findings were the following: 1) The quality of work life of staff nurses was at the high level. 2) Job characteristics, participative management and organizational support were positive and significantly related to the quality of work life, at the .05 level. (r = 0.51, 0.68, and 0.72). 3) The variables that could significantly predict the quality of work life of staff nurses in hospital under the jurisdiction of the ministry of defense were the job characteristics, participative management and organizational support predictors account for (R2 = 0.593) of variance. To maintain the high quality of work life level, nursing administrators should recognize how important of organizational support, keeping good relationships of employees, allowing staffs to have creative thinking for any particular tasks, promoting motivation and updating job performance regularly.
