The Effect of Therapeutic Relationship Combined with Telephone Continuing Care Program on Medical Adherence in Persons with Schizophrenia

Abstract

This research was a quasi-experimental nonequivalent group design. The objectives were to compare: 1 ) medical adherence of persons with schizophrenia before and after received therapeutic relationship combined with telephone continuing care program and 2) medical adherence of persons with schizophrenia who received therapeutic relationship combined with telephone continuing care program and those who received regular nursing care. The samples of 3 0 persons with schizophrenia who met the inclusion criteria were recruited from inpatient department, Somdetchaopraya Instituted of Psychiatry. The samples were matched pair with sex then randomly assigned into group either experimental 15 subjects and control group 15 subjects. The research instruments consisted of: 1) the therapeutic relationship combined with telephone continuing care program, 2 ) manual for after discharge care of schizophrenia patients, 3 ) the relationship between nurse and patient form, and 4 ) the medication adherence scale. All instruments were verified for content validity by 5 professional experts. The 4 th instruments had Cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability of 0.88. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.


The conclusions of this research were as follow :


1) Medical adherence of persons with schizophrenia who received therapeutic relationship combined with telephone continuing care program measured at the end of the intervention and at 4 weeks post intervention were significantly better than that pre intervention, (p < .05).


2) Medical adherence of persons with schizophrenia who received therapeutic relationship combined with telephone continuing care program measured at the end of the intervention and at 4 weeks post intervention were significantly better than those who received the regular nursing care, (p < .05)
