Abstract

The study aimed to understand healthcare professionals’ viewpoints regarding falls among patients admitted to a tertiary hospital. Nowadays, falls remain a fundamental and common problem among hospitalized patients, especially older adults. Although hospital fall prevention policies were applied, incidences continued to occur, resulting in temporary or permanent injury, an extended length of hospital stay, and more significant expenses. This research is a qualitative research using in-depth interview. Ten respondents who had experience in the ward were enrolled. The analysis of personal data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were classified using thematic analysis.

The results revealed that the healthcare personnel's perspective on inpatient falls was divided into two themes. The first was "Factors causing Falls" theme with four subthemes: patient, caregiver, medical devices, and environmental factors. The second theme was "Improved hospital measures" with two subthemes: inefficient current and future protocols with recommendations.
