Abstract

Purposes : To study and compare the levels of knowledge and anxiety among patients before and after receiving a preoperative preparation program.

Study design : A quasi-experimental study using a one-group pretest-posttest design.

Materials and Methods : The sample consisted of 29 patients undergoing elective surgery at Chaturaphak Phiman Hospital, selected through purposive sampling according to specified inclusion criteria. Sample size was calculated using G*Power 3.1. The intervention was a preoperative preparation program providing information on surgical procedures and complication prevention through brochures, handbooks, and digital media accessible via QR code, combined with individual counseling by nurses. Data collection instruments included a general information questionnaire, a 15-item knowledge questionnaire (IOC = 0.88, KR-20 = 0.78), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Form Y-1 (Cronbach's alpha = 0.84). Mean scores before and after the program were compared using the paired t-test.

Main findings : Before the program, 62.07% of patients had low knowledge, with a mean score of 6.75 (SD. = 2.34) out of 15. After the program, 82.76% had high knowledge, with a mean score of 13.44 (SD. = 1.15), a significant increase (p < .001, Cohen's d = 3.81). Regarding anxiety, before the program all patients had moderate anxiety, with a mean score of 55.48 (SD. = 2.49). After the program, all patients had low anxiety, with a mean score of 33.00 (SD. = 2.04), a significant decrease (p < .001, Cohen's d = 8.30).

Conclusion and recommendations : The preoperative preparation program was clearly effective in increasing knowledge and reducing anxiety among surgical patients. It should be adopted as a standard guideline for improving operating room nursing care quality in community hospitals.
