Effectiveness of an ADDIE Model-Based Modular Video on Dietary Management and Its Impact on Dietary Knowledge at Surat Thani Hospital

Abstract

Background: Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) are required to independently manage complex dietary regimens on an ongoing basis. However, conventional educational approaches are constrained by limited consultation time and insufficient opportunities for self-directed review of educational content. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of modular video media based on the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) and to examine its effect on dietary knowledge among patients undergoing PD.


Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involved the development and quality assessment of four educational video modules covering protein, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium based on the ADDIE model. A needs assessment was conducted with 12 patients, content validity was evaluated by three specialists using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC = 0.67–1.00), and the media’s process and product efficiency (E1/E2) were assessed in a small pilot group (n = 9). Phase 2 evaluated the effect of the developed media on dietary knowledge in a new sample of 38 patients at the Nephrology Center, Suratthani Hospital, using a paired-samples t-test.


Results: The developed media demonstrated process and product efficiency (E1/E2) of 83.89/82.78, exceeding the pre-established criterion of 80/80. Following exposure to the media, dietary knowledge scores increased significantly (p < 0.001), with mean scores increasing from 12.34 ± 2.87 to 17.89 ± 1.45.


Conclusion: The modular video media developed using the ADDIE model met the established efficiency criterion and significantly improved nutritional knowledge among patients undergoing PD. These findings support its use as an evidence-based educational innovation to promote dietary self-care in this population.
