Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental study aiming to investigate the effect of the pre-operative open-heart surgery preparation program at the Sirikit Northeastern Heart Center, Khon Kaen University. The population consisted of cardiovascular patients planning open-heart surgery and their healthcare teams during January-March 2026. The total sample size was 102 people, divided into a control group of 51 people and an experimental group of 51 people, along with 10 healthcare providers. The sample was selected using purposive sampling based on predefined criteria. The control group received standard nursing care, while the experimental group received the pre-operative open-heart surgery preparation program. Data collection instruments included a personal information questionnaire, a pre-operative self-care knowledge questionnaire, Spielberger's anxiety questionnaire, and a healthcare provider satisfaction questionnaire. Content validity index (CVI) were 1.0 and reliability were 0.81, 0.81, and 0.93 Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and p-value.

The results showed that... 1) The experimental group receiving the pre-operative open-heart surgery preparation program had a significantly higher mean knowledge score than the control group at the .05 statistical significance level. 2) The mean anxiety scores before the intervention differed significantly between the two groups, and the mean anxiety scores after the intervention decreased significantly between the two groups at the .05 statistical significance level. 3) The experimental group had a significantly lower mean anxiety score after receiving the program than the control group at the .05 statistical significance level. Therefore, providing a pre-operative open-heart surgery preparation program can improve knowledge and reduce anxiety scores more effectively than standard nursing care.
