The Effectiveness of a Breast Milk Expression Skills Training Program Using a Teaching Bra for Demonstrating Breast Milk ExpressionPostpartum Women at Somdej Phrajao Taksin Maharaj Hospital

Abstract

  This research was conducted to study the effectiveness of a manual breast milk expression training program using a demonstration garment on breast milk expression knowledge, skills, and satisfaction in postpartum women. A quasi-experimental research design using a one-group pretest-posttest design with follow-up was employed in a sample of 35 postpartum women from the postpartum ward of Somdej Phra Chao Taksin Maharaj Hospital between November and December 2025. The sample was selected using systematic random sampling. The research instruments were a skills training program and a breast milk expression demonstration garment. Evaluations were conducted at three stages: before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and two weeks after discharge. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and One-way repeated measures ANOVA. The statistical significance level was set at p-value <0.05.

  The results showed that the 35 participants, with an average age of 24.9 years, had improved average scores on breast milk expression knowledge and skills after receiving the program. (Both in the immediate post-test and follow-up periods) were significantly higher than before receiving the program (p-value <0.05). All participants demonstrated correct breast milk expression skills during the follow-up period. In addition, participants showed the highest level of satisfaction with the demonstration shirt.

  The skills training program using the demonstration Bra effectively developed the knowledge and practical skills of postpartum women and can be applied to promote breastfeeding in the long term.
