Faculty Practice in Palliative Nursing within Healthcare Services: Outcomes for Terminal Patients and Faculty Learning

This article aims to extract lessons learned from faculty practice in palliative nursing by reflecting on the outcomes of direct care provided through the palliative care service system led by the “Palanjai Ward” at Khon Kaen Hospital. This unit serves as a central hub for consultation, assessment, and management of care plans for patients with life-limiting illnesses across all hospital wards, ensuring continuity of care into the home and community. The experience is based on two case studies of patients with end-stage cancer. The care process included discharge planning, holistic assessment, symptom and spiritual care, home visits, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Evaluation tools included the WHOQOL-BREF, Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and family adaptation questionnaires. The results showed improved quality of life, reduced pain, and increased caregiver confidence in providing home-based care. Reflective practice by the faculty nurse enhanced competencies in nursing process application, therapeutic communication, and culturally responsive care. This faculty practice experience highlights a model for seamless palliative care and informs the development of student-centered learning in nursing education.
