Effects of a Multimedia-Based Pre-Practicum Preparation for Pediatric and Adolescent Nursing on Caring Behaviors of Nursing Students

This research was a two-group quasi-experimental study. The objective was to compare the average scores for caring behaviors among nursing students who underwent a clinical nursing practicum in Child and Adolescent Nursing Practice 2 between a group prepared with multimedia teaching materials and a group prepared with the usual instructional methods. The sample group consisted of 102 third-year nursing students, divided into an experimental group and a control group by a blocked randomization design. An experimental tool was multimedia teaching material developed based on social cognitive learning, which is based on the Six C’s of caring concepts by Roach, which encompasses compassion, competence, confidence, commitment, and comportment. An expert panel validated the instruments, and the content validity index (CVI) was 0.96. The data collection tool was a questionnaire about the caring behaviors of nursing students and the reliability as assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.80. Data was analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, means, standard deviations, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U tests. The results showed that, after the program, the average score for caring behaviors in the experimental group increased statistically significantly compared to their pre-experiment scores. The average score for caring behaviors in the experimental group was also statistically significantly higher than that of the control group. These results suggest that the use of multimedia teaching materials can enhance caring behaviors among nursing students. However, further research is needed to refine the teaching and learning strategies and achieve more comprehensive improvements in all dimensions of caring behaviors in a sustainable manner.
