Factors Influencing Intention to Use a Contraceptive Implant in Teenagers at Risk

Unplanned teenage pregnancy represents a significant public health challenge both in Thailand and other countries, globally. While implantable contraceptives offer an effective semi-permanent solution recommended by Ministry of Public Health, understanding the factors influencing their adoption among at-risk adolescents is crucial for successful implementation. This descriptive correlational research aimed to study the factors influencing the choice to use contraceptive implants among at-risk adolescents. The sample consisted of 96 adolescent females who received services at the Adolescent Clinic of Buriram Hospital. The research instruments included a general information questionnaire, knowledge questionnaire about contraceptive implants, attitude questionnaire towards contraceptive implants, perceived social norms questionnaire regarding contraceptive implants, and self-efficacy questionnaire concerning contraceptive implants. The reliability of the second instrument (KR-20) was 0.85, and the Cronbach's alpha coefficients for instruments 3 to 5 were 0.80, 0.79, and .83, respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency statistics, percentages, means, standard deviations, chi-square tests, and multiple logistic regression statistics.
The study revealed that 64.58% of participants chose implantable contraceptives. Significant predictors (p<.05) of contraceptive choice included marital status, living arrangements, previous contraceptive experience, knowledge levels, peer support, and self- efficacy. The findings highlight the multifaceted nature of contraceptive decision-making among adolescents. Implementation of comprehensive educational programs and development of supportive social networks are recommended to enhance the adoption of implantable contraceptives among at-risk teenagers.
