Abstract

This descriptive predictive correlational study aimed to study the factors Influencing the quality of Life among elderly people in Bang-oor sub-district, Nakhon Nayok Province, Thailand. The study’s participants were 340 elderly people living in the study setting. Data was collected using a three-part questionnaire to collect information on the participants’ 1) demographic characteristics, 2) economic factors, and 3) quality of life. The reliability of the quality of life portion of the questionnaires was validated by three experts using the index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC). The questionnaire’s IOC score was 0.93 and its Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.94. The data for the study was collected over for four months from February to May 2021. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression statistics to analyze the factors influencing the participants’ quality of life.

The results revealed that most of the participants were classified as young old, more than half were married or living as a couple, and most were unemployed. Additionally, their average monthly income was less than 3,000 Baht and 23.8% were living with chronic diseases. In terms of their quality of life (QoL),  55.3% of the participants rated their QoL as being moderate, while more than a third rated their QoL as being low. Factors influencing the participants’ QoL included monthly income (Beta = 0.158), age (Beta = 0.124), and the number of family members (Beta = 0.111), at a statistical significance level of .05.  The independent variables analyzed could jointly explain 19.1%  of the variation in the participants’ quality of life at a significance level of .01. The study indicates that the participants’ quality of life is statistically significantly related to the participants’ economic factors and demographic characteristics, with the factor having the greatest influence being their monthly income.
