Abstract

This systematic review aimed to summarize knowledge about self-management interventions and outcomes in diabetic patients with comorbidities. The researchers reviewed related literatures both Thai and English which were published in the past ten years. The results revealed that there were twelve studies related to this study including nine randomized controlled trials and 3 quasi-experimental studies. It was found that self-management interventions for diabetic patients with comorbidities consisted of five types: included health education and skill trainings, setting goal, monitoring, informative feeding and social support. The outcomes of self-management consisted of hemoglobin A1C, self-management behaviors, and knowledge about diabetes, other illnesses, and self-management.

The results suggest that nurses can use self-management interventions from this study to diabetic patients with comorbidities. However, the intervention should be adjusted according to the healthcare services and cultural context. As there is a limitation of the studies regards self-management in diabetic patients with comorbidities in Thailand, the researchers suggest that future studies should examine the outcomes of self-management intervention in these patients.
