The Effectiveness of Brief Advice and Brief Intervention Techniques on Self-Care Behavior Modification Among Patients with Non-Communicable Diseases: A Systematic Review

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a primary cause of global morbidity and mortality, making self-care behavior modification essential for disease control and preventing complications. However, healthcare systems often face significant time and resource constraints. Brief Advice (BA) and Brief Intervention (BI) techniques have emerged as potential strategies for effectively promoting health behaviors that are appropriate for practical clinical settings. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the existing empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of BA and BI techniques on self-care behavior modification among patients with non-communicable diseases. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and utilized the PICO framework. Searches were conducted on databases including ThaiJo, PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar, as well as on websites and reference lists for articles published between 2016 and 2025. Research articles were selected and quality-appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) criteria.
The eight studies that met the inclusion criteria consisted of seven quasi-experimental studies and one randomized controlled trial (RCT). The participants consisted of patients with NCDs, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic heart failure, and obesity. The synthesis revealed that Brief Advice and/or Brief Intervention techniques effectively promoted self-care behaviors, enhanced motivation for behavior modification, and improved clinical outcomes, including blood pressure levels, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body weight, and body mass index (BMI). In conclusion, brief advice and/or brief intervention techniques are appropriate and potent approaches for application in nursing practices to effectively promote self-care among patients with non-communicable diseases.
