Factors Associated with Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Colonoscopy

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine the relationships among personal factors, colonoscopy-related, illness-related, and perceived information factors with anxiety in patients undergoing colonoscopy. The sample consisted of 152 patients who underwent colonoscopy at the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit, Operating Department, Mahasarakham Provincial Hospital. Participants were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using four instruments: a personal data form, a colonoscopy and health status form, a colonoscopy patient information needs questionnaire, and a colonoscopy patient anxiety questionnaire. The reliability testing of the instruments yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.81 and 0.76, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and the chi-square tests.
The results revealed that the participants had a high level of information needs and a high level of anxiety. Age and duration of illness were also significantly associated with anxiety. In addition, information needs were positively and strongly correlated with anxiety at the .05 significance level. Other factors were not significantly related to anxiety. Therefore, nurses should develop nursing intervention programs for patients undergoing colonoscopy to alleviate anxiety and enhance patient satisfaction with healthcare services effectively.
