Abstract

This predictive correlational study aimed to examine factors predicting anxiety and depression symptoms among older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary Disease (COPD).  The sample was comprised of 97 older adults with COPD undergoing treatment at a specialized clinic at Borabue Hospital in Mahasarakham province. Data were collected using the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ), the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ), the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale-20 (RULS-20), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The reliability as assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.75, 0.93, 0.75, 0.76, 0.66 (for anxiety), and 0.67 (for depression), respectively. The analysis of the data employed descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regressions.

The results revealed that social support, perceived health status, and perceived stress were all factors that predicted anxiety symptoms. Together, these three factors explained 25% of the variation. Loneliness and social support were both factors that predicted depressive symptoms, which jointly accounted for 22% of the variance.  Thus, the integration of comprehensive psychological assessments, stress management strategies, and social support enhancement constitutes a key strategy in caring for older adults with COPD will ultimately contribute to the reduction of anxiety and depression symptoms in this population.
