Abstract

Currently, adolescents are the most vulnerable group to social media addiction, which leads to both physical and mental health problems, as well as a decrease in real-world interactions with those around them. Their focus on studying or participating in various activities is also reduced. This study aims to investigate the correlation between social media addiction, social interaction, and academic performance among adolescents in the elementary education system of Nakhon Ratchasima province. The participants consisted of 123 students of secondary school from grades 7 to 12, with data collected from December 2024 to February 2025. The instruments included: The Social-Media Addiction Screening Scale and 2) The Social Interaction Questionnaires, both of which had a content validity index of 1.00, and reliability of 0.91 and 0.93, respectively. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics through Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient and one-way ANOVA.

The results of this study found that social media addiction had a very high negative correlation with social interaction (r = -0.849) at a statistically significant level of p = .000. However, both social media addiction and social interaction showed no correlation with the academic performance of adolescents in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Social media addiction of adolescents in opportunity expansion schools, district schools, and provincial schools statistically significant level of p = .000. Therefore, teachers should organize activities that encourage students to interact more with their classmates and monitor to prevent excessive use of online media by adolescents, which could negatively impact their physical and mental health.
