This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a substance use rehabilitation program integrating community involvement and a mentorship-based, short-term, medication management system on preventing relapse among substance users in Na Wiang Subdistrict, Sai Mun District, Yasothon Province. This study was quasi-experimental research with a pre-post assessment design. The sample was divided into two groups including the experimental group, consisting of 21 patients who received the rehabilitation program, and the control group, consisting of 20 patients receiving traditional treatment. The research was conducted in two phases: 1) a 4-month implementation of activities within the rehabilitation program, and 2) a 3-month follow-up to track relapse behaviors, a total duration of 7 months. Additionally, satisfaction data was collected from patients including both successful and unsuccessful cases, public health officers, village health volunteers, and family caregivers. The research instruments included interviews, focus group discussion records, behavioral assessments, and satisfaction questionnaires. The data were analyzed using quantitative statistics and qualitative content analysis.
The results of the study showed an increase in both the intention level and self-efficacy in preventing relapse for both groups. A statistically significant difference was observed between the groups (p < .001). Follow-up data showed that the relapse rates for the experimental and control groups were 23.81% and 75%, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (p = .001). Regarding satisfaction, the majority expressed high satisfaction, with 55.56% indicating a positive response. The rehabilitation program for drug users, which integrated community involvement and continuous supervision with a mentor system to ensure adherence to prescribed medications, helped reduce relapse rates. This approach provides a holistic model for treating drug users. However, further studies should explore the feasibility of expanding the program.
